This authentic 19th-century Japanese fireman’s hood (presented on a simple wooden stand) is a remarkable example of traditional craftsmanship and utility. Constructed from multiple layers of indigo-dyed cotton, it features intricate sashiko 刺し子 hand stitching — a method used both for reinforcement and decorative appeal, with over 100 stitches per square inch.
The interior showcases a Tsutsugaki hand-painted design depicting powerful water dragons, symbolizing protection and strength. This hood not only served as essential protective gear for firefighters in Japan but also stands today as a beautiful historical artifact.
