This original 20th-century Japanese fireman’s hood is crafted from indigo-dyed cotton (and presented on a simple wooden stand) It showcases the traditional sashiko 刺し子 stitching technique — a hand-stitched method used for strength and decoration, with over 100 stitches per square inch.
It also features Tsutsugaki 筒描, a resist-dye technique used to apply meaningful motifs. On the outside, the hood displays the kanji 中 (center) inside a red circle. Inside, it bears the kanji 四号, meaning "fourth crew," offering insight into its historical function and the team it belonged to.
